- Someone who has one hour a week to offer?
If you are any of those, have you thought about volunteering?
BICR welcomes volunteers from all parts of the community. We are looking for compassionate, caring individuals who are committed to helping our participants live with the effects of an acquired brain injury. Our volunteers can help in many different areas, we have many rewarding roles working directly with our participants or providing support to the agency in other ways. BICR also hosts numerous fundraising events throughout the year such as the Golf Tournament, Bowling and the monthly BINGO games which are all areas where volunteers can help. There are options to work one-on-one with individuals or in a group setting.
BICR also actively promotes partnerships with local post- secondary institutions. We offer block placement opportunities as well as opportunities to complete any required volunteer placements. For instance, we accept students from the MedPlus program at Brock University and from the Social Service Worker program at Niagara College. Other programs we work closely with include the Educational Assistant, Recreation and Leisure, Child and Youth Worker, Neuroscience, Psychology and Sociology programs. In many cases these placements have led to long-term employment opportunities.
Some benefits of volunteering include:
- Gaining valuable experience that can translate into work experience
- Practical application of information learned in school
- Learn new skills
- Remain active in the community
- Network within the social services field
- Satisfaction of helping someone in need
